Long Islanders to Demand Suffolk Republicans Cancel Trump Event Just Blocks from Hate Murder of Marcelo Lucero:

Community members and religious leaders will hold press conference outside Patchogue Emporium to denounce event in village rocked by anti-immigrant violence

Patchogue, New York—On Wednesday, Long Islanders, including Joselo Lucero, will rally outside the Emporium in Patchogue to demand that Suffolk County Republican Chair John Jay LaValle cancel his Party’s fundraiser with Donald Trump on Thursday, which is slated to occur mere blocks away from the 2008 hate murder of Ecuadorian immigrant Marcelo Lucero. The Lucero killing highlighted what the Southern Poverty Law Center identified as a “Climate of Fear” created by then-Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy, who fanned the flames of anti-immigrant sentiment for political gain and created a permissive environment in which xenophobic violence proliferated.

Thursday’s event, at which Mr. Trump will repeat his anti-immigrant rhetoric, promises to re-open a devastating wound in a community torn apart by the violence that Trump-like divisiveness fosters. Mr. Trump launched his campaign by referring to Mexicans as “criminals” and “rapists,” and has repeatedly called for mass deportation of the country’s eleven million undocumented immigrants, as well as a ban on Muslims from entering the nation.
