Newark, NJ — Make the Road Action in NJ (MRA-NJ), the new grassroots advocacy organization representing Latino and immigrant communities in New Jersey, today announced its endorsement of Phil Murphy for governor. Formed in 2017, MRA-NJ represents 500 Latino members in New Jersey and is the sister organization to Make the Road New Jersey, the Elizabeth based non-profit that has won progressive policy changes for immigrant and workers’ rights and led resistance to Trump’s immigration executive orders in New Jersey.

New Jersey’s gubernatorial election will be one of the nation’s most closely-watched 2017 races. With immigrant communities under attack from Washington, immigrant and working families in New Jersey are looking for leadership from the candidates. Phil Murphy has deeply impressed Make the Road Action members with his commitment to making New Jersey a sanctuary state to keep families together.

Edison Vasquez, member of Make the Road Action in NJ, said: “As the Trump administration unleashes unprecedented attacks on immigrants and workers, we need a governor in New Jersey that will stand up and fight for working families, people of color and immigrants, not capitulate to Trump. That’s why Make the Road Action in NJ is endorsing Phil Murphy for governor. Phil has the vision, smarts and compassion to make New Jersey a national leader in the resistance. He is with our community on issue after issue—including raising the minimum wage to $15, defending workers against wage theft, extending access to drivers’ licenses and legal counsel to immigrants, and making the Garden State a sanctuary for all.”

Phil Murphy, candidate for Governor of New Jersey, said: “This campaign is about standing up for everyone in our state. New Jersey must be a sanctuary for the hard working immigrant families that call the Garden State home. As governor, I will fight hard to protect immigrants by extending legal counsel to immigrants who are detained and facing deportation and expanding eligibility for financial aid and drivers’ licenses to immigrants, regardless of status. No family should have to fear deportation when they drive their children to school or go to work. When immigrants have access to a driver’s license our roads will be safer, our economy stronger and our families’ will remain intact. I thank Make the Road Action in NJ for their endorsement.”

Make the Road Action in New Jersey’s endorsement adds momentum to the Murphy campaign, which has already generated impressive community and labor support, including endorsements from SEIU 32BJ, 1199 SEIU, CWA, Working Families Alliance and more than 30 other labor organizations, as well as hundreds of elected and faith leaders.

Make the Road Action in NJ builds political power rooted in working class, Latino and immigrant communities, promotes progressive policy solutions, and strengthens the movement for justice through electoral and grassroots organizing. Make the Road Action Congratulates Senator-Elect John Brooks, Calls on New York Democrats to Unite in Albany Against Trump

Top immigrant advocacy group backed John Brooks and has helped lead charge against Trump agenda in New York

Long Island, NY — In response to the victory of John Brooks in the election for New York's State Senate District 8, Make the Road Action’s Co-Executive Director Javier H. Valdés issued the following statement on behalf of the organization’s thousands of Latino and immigrant members:

“Make the Road Action members were proud to endorse and stand with John Brooks in his race for Senate, and we congratulate him today for his hard-fought victory. Following an election that featured anti-immigrant attacks from Republicans on Democratic Senate candidates across Long Island, we know that John Brooks will stand with our community. We look forward to working with him to defend the rights and needs of working-class families.

“The Senate election on Long Island should mark a turning point for New York politics. We call on all 32 Democrats to stand together and assume the majority they have won in the State Senate. At a time when immigrant communities, Muslims, and communities of color are under attack by the incoming Trump administration, it is more important than ever for Democrats to work together to protect New Yorkers from Mr. Trump and the Senate Republicans that have copied his anti-immigrant playbook in recent months. We ask Governor Cuomo to work hard to restore a united Democratic majority to the Senate.”

Make the Road Action Co-Executive Directors Valdés and Deborah Axt published an opinion article this week in the Times Union laying out the case for Democratic unity, which can be read here (text copied below).
