Overview
Make the Road Action NY (MRA NY) focuses on building power across Latine and immigrant communities in New York. Historically, our work has focused on organizing our community to defend immigrant rights, workers rights, healthcare, education, housing affordability and other issues that impact everyday New Yorkers.
The results of our year-round organizing show that continued investment in community engagement is crucial for success. As we look ahead to 2026, we are committed to mobilizing community members who are deeply concerned about losing their healthcare, rising energy costs, and the growing lack of affordable housing. Our efforts ensure that lawmakers hear directly from their constituents and understand the urgent need to stop harmful cuts to healthcare and other essential services.
We have also elevated the importance of protecting immigrant New Yorkers through policies like the New York for All Act, which would limit local collaboration with ICE. Across all levels of government, we have brought forward our concerns about immigration enforcement and shared powerful stories showing how ICE overreach continues to harm our communities.
MRA NY’s deep community roots, successful voter contact strategies, and strong organizing history position us perfectly to mobilize our members and base for upcoming elections.
Victories
We engaged New Yorkers on the key issues impacting their daily lives: out-of-control immigration enforcement, the lack of affordable housing, the rising cost of living, and workers’ rights.
Over the past year in New York City, we spoke out about the need to invest in human services and programs that truly keep our communities safe instead of prioritizing NYPD funding while cutting essential services. We specifically organized for increased funding for programs that support transgender New Yorkers, adult education classes, and more. In many cases, we succeeded in protecting or even expanding these critical programs.
Additionally, we also made calls with a strategic focus on supporting our endorsed candidates: Brad Lander, Zohran Mamdani, and Adrienne Adams while actively opposing Andrew Cuomo and Eric Adams. One notable outcome was that nearly 65% of voters we contacted pledged not to rank Andrew Cuomo in the election, reflecting strong opposition to his candidacy.
Our electoral efforts were concentrated on key municipal races including City Council, Public Advocate, Mayor, Comptroller, and Borough President. A major highlight of the 2025 cycle was the historic victory of candidate Zohran Mamdani as Mayor.
